The Negative Affects of Technology on the Environment

Activate prior knowledge. 10 minutes
Have a little survey for the class to fill out individually to find out what they know about recycling e-waste. How many electronics their family has recycled or how many are sitting unused in storage. If they know they can take old electronics back to stores (eg- Future Shop, Best Buy, London Drugs)
Have a class discussion about the answers that they have provided.
Acquire new knowledge. 20 minutes

Watch the COMPUTER RECYCLING - "How it Works" video (6 minutes)
Have the students search the internet to find the 3 closest e-waste recycling depots.
Apply new knowledge. 10 minutes
Have small discussion groups thinking of the e-waste that is sitting unused in their homes and how they could get it to a recycling depot before it goes directly to the landfill.
Assessment.
Have the students take an inventory of their household items that would be appropriate to take to the e-waste recycling and bring at least one item into school for the teacher to take to the depot.
